GRACE
Trip, when are you going to get rid of this?

TRIP
What, Grace… this?

GRACE
Yes, you know how I feel about it —

TRIP
I know I know I’ll do it right now, alright?!

GRACE
You know I’ve had to ask you about this several —

TRIP
Get off my back! I’ll get rid of it in just a minute!

(Amy knocks on the front door.)

(Amy knocks on the front door.)

GRACE
Fine, Trip… fine… — (interrupted)

TRIP
Oh, she’s here!

GRACE
What?! You said she’s coming an hour from now!

TRIP
No, she’s right on time!

GRACE
Trip…!

(Trip opens the front door.)

TRIP
Amy!!

TRIP
Ah I’m so happy you could make it! — (interrupted)

(Amy hugs trip.)

AMY
Hi Trip!

TRIP
Yeah, hi!

TRIP
Wow, it’s so great to see you after — (interrupted)

TRIP
Uh, well, it’s — it’s good to see you.

AMY
Were you arguing?

TRIP
Uh, n — no, heh, come in!

TRIP
Uh, it’ll be just a sec while I go get Grace…

TRIP
(unintelligable arguing)

TRIP
(unintelligable arguing)

GRACE
No, no, here we are!

GRACE
Amy,

(AMY hugs grace.)

GRACE
Hi! How are you? Oh god it’s been such a long time! — (interrupted)

AMY
Hi grace

GRACE
H-mmm (happy smile sound)

GRACE
By the way, you look fabulous!

GRACE
Make yourself at home, come on in! — (interrupted)

AMY
Thanks

GRACE
Aw, ha ha ha!

AMY
You look fabulous too

GRACE
So, Amy, ha, maybe you can give me your honest opinion about where I

went wrong with my new decorating, uhh…

(Trip closes the front door.)

GRACE
(little sigh)

TRIP
Oh, Grace, no, no, h — how can you say that? — (interrupted)

AMY
I like the flat

TRIP
Ah, see, I knew she would like it! I knew you would like it,

everybody does.

GRACE
(little sigh)

GRACE
So, about my decorating…

GRACE
Uhh, you know, when I saw this armoire on the show floor, I thought it

had such a clean, simple look to it…

TRIP
I, I — I think it’s f — fabulous. I — I really do.

AMY
Why don’t you like it?

GRACE
but looking at it here in the apartment, it just looks — (interrupted)

TRIP
W — well, uh, it, it always amazes me, how after a full day’s work

designing magazine ads, Grace still has the energy to decorate…

GRACE
Ha ha, heh, I guess it’s just the artist in me dying to get out, ha…

GRACE
Uhh… I’m sure I can return most of this, and try to start over again

on this room…

AMY
Why don’t you like the decoration?

GRACE
Oh, really?

TRIP
Ah, see, Grace, I was right, no one has a problem with your decorating!

GRACE
(frustrated complacent sigh) Uhh, well, whatever, I’m going to return

most of this anyhow. I have to redo this room.

AMY
I like your decoration.

GRACE
Oh… well… thanks —

TRIP
Well that’s a nice thing to say. It’s nice to hear, hmm, Grace?

AMY
Definitely keep it.

GRACE
Oh let’s not talk about my decorating anymore, I’m redoing the room

this week, that’s all there is to it.

TRIP
Amy, let me get you a drink.

TRIP
Ah, you’ll be the first to sample from my new set of imported drinking

glasses.

AMY
I would love a drink

TRIP
Uh — well, we should drink.

TRIP
How about a martini?

TRIP
I just got a hold of this rare imported Icelandic vermouth I want you

to try!

AMY
Yes, please.

GRACE
uhh… you and your high class drinks… — (interrupted)

TRIP
Beautiful!

GRACE
No no,

GRACE
Amy, maybe you’d like just a simple glass of white wine?

TRIP
uhh…

AMY
martini please

TRIP
Excellent! It won’t take me more than a minute!

GRACE
(little sigh) Sometimes I’m afraid Trip thinks the best way to a

friend’s heart is through his liver.

TRIP
What was that?

AMY
I like drinking

TRIP
Grace, what can I get you to drink tonight? Surprise me. —

(interrupted)

TRIP
Uh, yeah, I — I was just going to ask Grace what she wants.

GRACE
You know, I don’t want to drink tonight.

GRACE
I just want a little sparkling water.

TRIP
Fine.

AMY
Have a drink, Grace.

TRIP
Oh, yeah, you know, I think I’ll fix us another drink in not too

long…

TRIP
Okay, well, I was worried there for a bit you were on Grace’s side

tonight, heh heh, heh.

TRIP
Heh heh, Amy, seeing you brings back good memories, you know?

GRACE
Yes…

AMY
why don’t you drink, Grace?

TRIP
Alright Grace, your drink is ready.

GRACE
Thanks.

TRIP
Whoa I just realized something!

GRACE
What…

TRIP
We have to celebrate! Tonight’s a special night!

GRACE
What do you mean?

TRIP
Amy, remember, it was almost exactly ten years ago, tonight, that you

introduced us.

TRIP
Senior year of college!

GRACE
Oh… geez…

TRIP
Remember that?

TRIP
Alright, here you go!

AMY
Yes, I remember

(AMY picks up a player’s drink.)

TRIP
We really want to thank you for years and years of…

GRACE
Pain.

TRIP
Heh heh heh… Agony.

AMY
Sorry

TRIP
Uh — I – I mean, uh, it’s, uh — it’s great you could be here tonight.

TRIP
(little sigh) — (interrupted)

AMY
Ten years!

TRIP
Well… I think it’s great you could be here tonight on our dating

anniversary.

AMY
I’m so jealous of you two.

TRIP
You don’t agree? uh, okay, well…

GRACE
Trip, there’s nothing wrong with disagreeing in front of our friend —

TRIP
Disagreeing?! We’re NOT disagreeing.

AMY
Are you disagreeing?

TRIP
W — wait, wait, b – but, no no, w – we’re — we’re not disagreeing.

AMY
You are1

TRIP
Oh, — (interrupted)

(Grace sips her Grace’s drink.)

GRACE
Oh, well, please, go look at Trip’s Italy — (interrupted)

GRACE
Uhh, it’s a beautiful picture of the Italian countryside, of course

she’ll like — (interrupted)

GRACE
uh…

TRIP
Oh, — (interrupted)

TRIP
Amy, Come take look at this!

GRACE
God, this evening is getting more exhilarating by the minute… —

(interrupted)

GRACE
By the way, anybody, join me on the couch if you like.

TRIP
Um… uhh, Now, Amy, in one word, what does this picture say to

you?

GRACE
Say to you… say to you… yes, good question, good question.

AMY
Passion

TRIP
Mmm… no…

GRACE
Wait, what’s wrong with that? That’s a perfectly fine answer! —

(interrupted)

TRIP
(little sigh) No just take a look, this says…

GRACE
How about controlling.

AMY
Romance

TRIP
Right! Love! Romance!

GRACE
Romance? Ha, in our marriage, that’s just a code word for

manipulation.

TRIP
Grace, it’d been such a long time since we’d… had a chance to —

GRACE
You planned that trip without even asking me if I wanted to go!

GRACE
Amy, that’s not the first time he’s done that!

TRIP
(annoyed sigh)

GRACE
And you knew I planned to attend my friend’s art show that weekend!

GRACE
A very good friend from college had a gallery show of his new

paintings that weekend, and I missed it!

TRIP
What?

TRIP
Uhh, you’re driving me insane!

GRACE
Ahh, no, I’m the one going insane!

(AMY puts down a player’s drink.)

GRACE
Goddamn romance…

GRACE
Trip, our whole marriage, you’re so… controlling! — (interrupted)

(AMY hugs grace.)

GRACE
No, please stop taking sides, it’s just going to make it worse! —

(interrupted)

AMY
Amy – it’s okay.

GRACE
Okay, I hear you, I hear you…

TRIP
(little impatient sigh) Amy, can you believe this?

TRIP
(frustrated sigh)

GRACE
And you…

GRACE
I can predict what you’ll say…

GRACE
You’re so positive tonight, it’s driving me crazy!

AMY
Trip – did you know?

GRACE
Huh? What, what was that?

TRIP
Goddamn manipulation…

TRIP
You never listen to me! You don’t believe anything I say! You just

don’t listen.

GRACE
Oh, God…!

GRACE
Romance… goddamn…

GRACE
How am I supposed to be happy and in love when you keep trying to act

romantic and funny and all that bullshit? How?

TRIP
Oh, come on…!

AMY
Did you know about the art show?

GRACE
Okay, you know what, Amy,

GRACE
I need to ask you something.

TRIP
Grace —

GRACE
Trip, let me ask our guest a question.

GRACE
Amy, yes or no…

GRACE
When you get married, you’re just supposed to forgive and forget

everything bad that happened before that, right?

TRIP
What?

GRACE
I mean, that’s what you must to do in a marriage — forgive, yes?

GRACE
Yes or no.

AMY
Yes

GRACE
What…?!

GRACE
Oh, yes, that’s fine… that’s fine…

AMY
You must forgive.

GRACE
Just admit it, Trip, admit it, we have an shitty marriage! We’ve never

been really happy, from day one! Never, goddammit!

TRIP
Oh, god…!

TRIP
Uhh! Yeah, go on, get away from me!

(AMY comforts trip.)

TRIP
I can’t frigging take this!

TRIP
Oh… Shit!

AMY
Calm down.

TRIP
What are you saying to me?! W — what?

GRACE
What, Trip? Are you trying to talk to me? — (interrupted)

GRACE
Oh, God!!

GRACE
Amy, — (interrupted)

(AMY hugs grace.)

GRACE
Oh, Amy, look, I know you’re trying to help, but right now we just

need get this all out in the open…

GRACE
Trip, it’s your fault — ten years ago, freshly married and just out of

college,

GRACE
you convinced me to go into advertising, instead of art!

TRIP
What?

GRACE
If it weren’t for you, I could be a real artist by now.

TRIP
Uhh… Amy, uhh…

AMY
You can still be an artist

TRIP
Ah!

GRACE
See, Amy, all this time, I just can’t stop thinking that I should

have been painting!

TRIP
Why don’t you just do it then?

TRIP
Be a goddamn artist already. What are you afraid of, Grace?

GRACE
Well, but… Amy, I… I… uhh…

AMY
Paint, Grace.

GRACE
Uhh, this painting, well… mmm… see, all I really wanted was

something personal and, uh… beautiful and special…

TRIP
Grace…

GRACE
But I just… mmm… no, I — I just get so depressed and angry when I

look at it!

TRIP
Jesus…!

AMY
You should become an artist.

GRACE
Uhh, Amy, I think we discussed that already… (frustrated sigh)

AMY
You would be happy as an artist

TRIP
Aha!

GRACE
You’re saying I’m… not depressed? Uhh… well…

GRACE
See, Amy, I… uhh… I’ve been very lonely.

AMY
Why are you lonely?

GRACE
Ah!

TRIP
Amy, you’re saying… I’m not a loving person? Uhh… no…

TRIP
Grace, you know I’ve never wanted anyone but you…

GRACE
No?

TRIP
N — no…! Amy, I, I — I mean, no… heh…

AMY
Trip does love you.

GRACE
Ah!

TRIP
What?! Are — are you trying to say… I might not love Grace?!

GRACE
What?!

TRIP
Jesus, I — is that… that’s what you think is going on here?!

GRACE
Is — is that really what you think?!

AMY
No.

GRACE
No?

TRIP
Jesus, uhh, I think you’re taking back what you said, at least…

TRIP
Oh, geez…

AMY
Yes. You love her.

TRIP
Yes?

TRIP
Oh God… this is so frigging insane… uhh…

(AMY hugs trip.)

AMY
Marriage is hard.

GRACE
Look, if we’re going to talk about marriage, all I can say is, it

doesn’t turn out the way you expect it to.

TRIP
Grace…

GRACE
I’m not saying marriage is a bad idea or something, I’m just…

GRACE
saying I think it’s hard to predict what it will actually be like…

TRIP
Grace, no…

AMY
What marriage do you want?

GRACE
Uhh, Amy, didn’t we already talk about that topic? (frustrated

sigh)

TRIP
Okay, I’m sick of this bullshit!!

TRIP
Amy, I know what you’re hinting at, okay?!

TRIP
about us…

TRIP
about our marriage…

TRIP
Do you two want the truth? Huh?

TRIP
Amy, do you want to hear it?

AMY
Yes

TRIP
Grace, huh?

GRACE
Yes…!

TRIP
See, Amy, I’ve been paying attention to what you’ve been saying

tonight.

TRIP
You’ve been pushing me tonight.

TRIP
And I wonder, are you really my friend or not.

GRACE
Trip!

TRIP
Amy, I ask you this — yes or no…

AMY
Yes. I am your friend.

TRIP
Do you really think that…

TRIP
praising Grace…

TRIP
saying that Grace is not loved…

TRIP
saying that Grace is depressed…

TRIP
telling Grace to make art…

TRIP
and worst of all,

TRIP
saying I need to be more loving…

TRIP
and what you said about being in sync with each other in a marriage…

TRIP
that we’ll somehow realize something about our marriage?

TRIP
Is what you’ve said tonight supposed to add up somehow, to something?

TRIP
Is it? Just give me a yes or no.

AMY
Yes

TRIP
Okay.

TRIP
Grace…

TRIP
uhh…

TRIP
I forced you to marry me, didn’t I.

TRIP
When I proposed to you, in front of your parents, on Christmas Eve,

and…

TRIP
I knew you wouldn’t be capable of saying no.

GRACE
You manipulated me.

TRIP
Yes.

GRACE
And I never did anything about it.

GRACE
And here we are.

TRIP
uhh…

GRACE
uhh…

GRACE
Oh my God…!

TRIP
Amy, I —

GRACE
I’m going to give you the truth too, Trip.

TRIP
What?!

GRACE
I painted this.

TRIP
Bullshit.

GRACE
I am an artist, Trip, fuck you.

TRIP
You’ve been secretly painting? When —

GRACE
Everytime you go on a goddamn business trip, I paint.

GRACE
So don’t EVER give me any more of your ‘you could never be an artist’

crap!!

TRIP
Jesus —

(AMY points to the big abstract painting.)

GRACE
uhh…

TRIP
uhh…

AMY
You should be supportive, Trip

TRIP
Jesus…!

TRIP
Okay, Amy, Grace, I have one more thing to say…

GRACE
Again?!

TRIP
Grace…

TRIP
uhh…

TRIP
I’ve been having an affair.

GRACE
Oh my God.

TRIP
It’s over now, though.

GRACE
But how could you —

TRIP
(big sigh) with the client, in, uh, Barcelona.

GRACE
Maria.

TRIP
I was lonely, Grace.

TRIP
But, but, I — I regret it, I really, really regret it.

TRIP
uhh…

GRACE
uhh…

AMY
Why did you do it?

GRACE
Oh my God…!

GRACE
This changes everything…

TRIP
Yeah.

GRACE
You finally admitted it — you felt very alone… and you had an

affair…

TRIP
You… you really have to be an artist…

TRIP
I manipulated you into marrying me…

GRACE
No, I — I let it happen…

TRIP
Amy, I —

GRACE
Amy, we…

TRIP
Look, we — we need to talk…

GRACE
Yeah.

TRIP
Amy, Thanks for coming over, you… I think you helped us.

(AMY hugs trip.)

(AMY hugs grace.)

(Trip opens the front door.)

AMY
Be careful.

TRIP
And no, Amy, you don’t need to say anything more…

AMY
Goodbye

TRIP
And no, Amy, please, it’s okay…

GRACE
Bye. Thanks.

AMY
I love the both of you

(Trip closes the front door.)
