C2E2 Schedule

Team WicDiv (minus Matt) are at C2E2 in chicago this weekend. Come and say hello! We don’t charge for signatures, but if you want more than (say) 5 signing in one go, we ask people to go to the back of a queue to make it fair for everyone. (”You disgust me” – Ed)

London Film & Comic Con

It’s London Film & Comic Con this weekend, and I’m popping along for a while.

Here’s my schedule…

12-2pm: At Table.
3-5pm: At Table

11pm: Writing for Star Wars panel: John Ostrander, John Wagner and me.
12:30 – 2pm: At Table.

Hopefully see some folks around.

NYCC: Team WicDiv Schedule

You can find us at X1 and X2 in Artist’s Alley. That is here…

We will be there as much as we can. There is specific signing times below when all of the Team will be there, which are good times to come and see us. Times outside of these, there’s likely to be someone from the team there. At the least, someone should be looking after the table and be willing to sell you stuff. We have books and similar. Plus…

Show exclusive Dionysus shirts. All common sizes, M/F cuts, $25.

(We don’t know what we’ll be doing with any left-over shirts. We’ll see after the con. If you definitely want one, try to speak to someone who is going. We honestly dunno what we’re doing with them, assuming there’s any left at all.)

Our signings can be really incredibly busy. As such, we have to walk a line between our gratitude towards any individual for supporting our work and everyone else who’s waiting. We find the following our best compromise…

  • We’ll sign up to 5 books.
  • If you want us to sign more, you can go to the back of the queue.
  • If you go to the back of the queue enough times, we’ll sign literally anything.
  • If the queue is short, we’ll probably sign more.
  • If our time is short, we may sign less. Otherwise there’s a risk people may not get signed at all.

There’s no fee for signing.

Jamie doesn’t sketch at cons. It is sometimes difficult to stop Kieron doodling. This is perverse, we know, but we’re kind of a perverse team.

To stress what was stated above – there’s normally a fair chance that at least one of us will be at our table. The below are special times for getting all of us, or signings at other places.

9pm – Matt will totally be signing at Midtown Comics.

10:30 – 1:15: Signing at Our Table (Everyone)
2:15 – 3:30: Signing at Our Table (Everyone)

8:00: Signing at Forbidden Planet (Matt Wilson)

10:30 – 11:30: Signing at Our Table (Everyone)
12:00 – 12:45: Marvel Signing (Matt Wilson) – Booth 1354
1:00 – 2:00: Signing at Our Table (Everyone)
3:00 – 3:45: Signing at the Image Booth (Everyone) – Booth 1544
4:00 – 4:45: Signing at the Image Booth (Matt Wilson) – Booth 1544
4:00 – 4:45: Signing at the Marvel Booth (Kieron Gillen) – 1354

10:30 – 1:00: Signing at Our Table (Everyone)
3:00 – 3:45: Signing at Image Booth (Matt Wilson) – Booth 1544
4:00 – 4:45: Signing at Image Booth (Everyone) – Booth 1544
5:15 – 7:00: Signing at Our Table (Everyone)

10:30 – 12:45: Signing at Our Table (Everyone)
1:00 – 2:00: Signing at Avatar Booth (Kieron) – Booth 1920
4:15 – 5:00: Signing at Our Table (Everyone)

Always good to list these separately.

5:30 PM – 6:30: Avatar Press:  Creativity Unleashed (Kieron) - Room 1A18
Where Kieron presumably has a ramble about his Avatar stuff, and god knows what else.

We should be at the Image Afterparty at some point too.

1:30 — 2:30: Using Tumblr To Sell Your Idea (Kieron) – 1B031
Where Kieron probably do live Meme-Performance art.

2:45 – 3:45: Cup O’Joe Panel (Kieron) – Empire Stage 1-E
The big fancy Marvel Panel where Kieron will probably mumble about Darth Vader.

1:15 - 2:15: Image: Where Creators Own Craft (Matt) - 1A21
Where Matt talks about how he saves our asses on a monthly basis.

2:45 – 3:45: Horrific Visions of the Crossed! (Kieron) 1A01
Where Kieron talks about the horrific visions of the Crossed. Presumably.

9:00 – 6:00 Lying in a hole and just crying and crying and crying and swear we’ll never do this again.

How To Stalk Me: Nine Worlds, GOSH and The Big Bang.

I’m being let out the house over the next couple of weeks. Let us gather! Let us be beautiful and/or write names on books and generally do stuff.

NINE WORLDS – Saturday August 8th
Nine Worlds at the Radisson Blu Edwardian at Heathrow is an excellent multi-fandom progressive con that’s now in its third year. I usually describe it as a petri dish for the future of fandom, and I think that still holds. It’s on there for three days, but I’m only attending on the Saturday, and have two official commitments.

Show, Don’t Tell: Wordless Comics – why make wordless comics? What do they represent? – 10.00am – 11.15am, Connaught A
From sign-language to space to animal speech, why make wordless comics and why are they so effective?
Panel with Howard Hardiman, Sarah Gordon, Kieron Gillen, Sally Jane Thompson, Stephen Lacey

Drawing Dinner: Food and Comics: noodles to pizza, why is eating so evocative? – 6.45pm – 8.00pm, Connaught A
Manga is full of food-as-feeling, from domesticity to ceremony. Why does a drawing of the steam rising from hot soup work? What’s the language of food?
Panel with Kieron Gillen, Charlotte Geater, Zoe Burgess, Hazel Southwell

Which are two agreeable oddities.

As I’m there and I know assorted WicDiv sorts will be, I wanted to also do an informal gathering. If people want to meet at 4:30 in the Bijou Bar (Which is the one on the left as you come in) I’ll sign whatever you wish and talk all things to do with anything I’ve written. If too many people turn up, we can go outside and crouch in the sunshine.

I’m big on improvisation. Will be good to see people. I suspect I will be in over candid mode, so think of it as an AMA. In a pub. Because I’m me.

Tickets are still available, both for the weekend as a whole and just for the Saturday. Have a nose at the programme. I suspect if you think you’d like it, you’d like it. And for a tiny minor note which may appeal to some of you, it’s been a big influence on various things in WicDiv – Inanna, especially, and the first Ragnarock Laura went to.

GOSH, LONDON – 12th August, 6-7pm.
Phonogram returns. Jamie and I are doing a signing at GOSH in London. We’ll sign anything, but we have a limit of five books at once. If you want to re-queue, we’ll sign some more.

THE BIG BANG, DUBLIN – 15th August, 11am-1pm.
As the Big Bang have a lovely new shop, we thought it’d be fun to go over and do a signing. Tula Lotay and myself will be there, which makes it an idea time to get your WicDiv 13?s signed. Details here, though worth noting the exact times may change a little. I think it’ll be more likely to continue longer though.

Anyway – that’s where I’ll be. Come unto me, etc.

NYCC Schedule

Jamie McKelvie, Matt Wilson and Kieron Gillen will be attending the New York Comic Con from October 9th-12th. They will be doing “things” when they’re there. They’re on panels. They’re doing signings. They’re manning their fine table, K10 in artist’s alley, in the North Pavillion.

(Expect “we’re the neighbours of robot dogs gags”, which only old Doctor Who fans will get.)

This is basically a list of all of Jamie, Matt and my own commitments. Includes all panels for all publishers. It’s quite the thing. COME SAY HELLO.

Our table is in Artist’s Alley. It’s K10. Here’s a map of Artist’s alley (THE NORTH PAVILION) showing where we will be.

There will be a bunch of our stuff there, including this T-shirt.

Assuming they turn up, which isn’t guaranteed. Sizes up to XL, both M/F cuts. $20, I think?

You want to meet us? Great. We want to meet you too, and not in the Chip Zdarsky way.

Generally speaking, when we don’t have any other commitments, you’ll probably find us here. However, we also have press commitments and other things not in here. As such, I’ve specifically labelled times where it’s likely you’ll find the full force of WicDiv at our table.

Which isn’t to say some or all of us won’t be there at other times. The table should basically be manned constantly. Fingers crossed.

1:30-3:30 – A good time to find team WicDiv at their artist alley table (K10)

3:30 – 4:30 – Avatar Signing (Kieron) – 1920

4-5:30 – Avatar Signing (Kieron) – 1920

6:15 – 7:00pm – Kieron Gillen – Avatar Spotlight Panel (Kieron. Unsurprisingly) – 1A14

Can’t believe I got my own panel now. In passing – this will basically be me fucking around for an hour, talking about whatever anyone wants to talk about. That’ll include all my work as well, rather than just my Avatar stuff.

SATURDAY (10am to 7pm)

Jamie and Kieron won’t be at the con much before noon on Saturday. Not just because of laziness.

1-2pm – Marvel Signing (Kieron) – 1354

2-3pm – Image Signing (Matt/Kieron/Jamie) – 1544

3:30-5 – A good time to find team WicDiv at their artist alley table (K10)

11-12: Avatar Signing (Kieron) – 1920

12:15 – 1pm – Marvel Axel-In-Charge Panel (Kieron) – 1A06

1pm-2pm – Image Signing (Jamie/Matt/Kieron) – 1544

2-5pm A good time to find team WicDiv at their artist alley table (K10)

5pm Too late. We’ll inevitably be on the way to the pub.

NICE Con: This Weekend

Anyone near Bedford this weekend? I’ll be at both days of NICE con. That’s September 13th and 14th.

Only on one panel, which is Comics as Satire which is 3pm on a Saturday. I’ll be doing some signing at some point, so check out the schedule when you arrive.

(i.e. I don’t know when.)

Come say Hi, generally speaking. I’ll be in a mellow mode.

Nine Worlds Schedule

I’ll be at the Nine Worlds con this weekend, where I’ll be being aggressively myself for 72 hours straight. Stay clear.

If you decide to disobey that clear guideline, you can find me at any of these. And the bar, obv.

I’m hoping I haven’t forgotten anything. That is very unlikely to happen, obv.

With some trepidation, I agreed to go on this…

Fourth Wall Fandom: creator/fan interaction, gently crumbling the fourth wall
Creators of canon are increasingly likely to interact with their fanbase, whether by referencing fannish tropes in the TV show / film / book, or by interacting with fans on social media platforms. This doesn’t always work out well … The panel discuss how creators can learn to love fandom, how fans can engage with creators, and whether creators (fan or pro) should engage with transformations of their work.
Panel: Emma England, Kieron Gillen, Roz Kaveney, Melissa Taylor, Zalia

…which obviously will be interesting depending how honest diplomatic I decide to be. There’s a panel about sex and violence on at the same time, which would have been much more fun. Man! I just don’t have a tiny drop of sense in my amusingly potato shaped head.

Later, quoting from Paul’s blog

8.30pm: Only A Moment (Room 38). This is a well known game involving speaking for a minute without hesitation, deviation or repetition, renamed because the BBC got in touch. (No, seriously!) I’ll be running it, and Elizabeth Bear, Kieron Gillen, Liz Myles and Laurie Penny will be my guests.

Clearly, I’ll be crap at all of this, so this would be ideal for anyone who likes seeing me being humiliated in public.

1.30pm – 2.45pm
Dis/Continuity: long-running characters, change, evolution and disruption
The challenges, joys, disappointments and outright confusion of writing, following and redesigning characters with 60+ years of sometimes-not-entirely-straightforward back story.
Paul Cornell, Kieron Gillen, Nat Wilkinson, Misha Sumra

…where Paul and I will have a good whine about our Iron Man and Wolverine runs, I suspect, because we are big ol’ whiners.

Then probably the one I’m worrying about most…

5.00pm – 6.45pm
Creators on Comics
Kieron Gillen (Phonogram, Uncanny X-Men, The Wicked & The Divine) dismantles WATCHMEN to demonstrate everything everyone should have ripped off instead of just tediously having superdudes break other dude’s fingers. Si Spurrier (Six-Gun Gorilla, X-Force, Disenchanted) talks about the eternal sexual war between WORDS and PICTURES! Then they answer questions! And chat! And hold one another!
Si Spurrier, Kieron Gillen, Hazel Robinson

…Where you probably sense a little Gillen-has-written-this about the above text.

(I didn’t write my bio. I’m a little disappointed it didn’t feature STRONG CHARACTER ASSASSINATION and/or mentioning of the Skavengers.)

Anyway – I’m doing a formalist examination of Watchmen, basically in response to Jon Browne asking what was so special about Watchmen anyway. I’m still writing this, so I’m wrestling with all manner of stuff, not least that ejecting lots of more standard literary analysis to concentrate on formalism does miss so much of what makes Watchmen work. And then fitting it in 40 minutes tops.

I may just throw it all out and just spend my time reciting bits of WE3.

Writing Historical Fiction and Fanfic: is RPF okay when the person is dead?
How do we write about historical characters? Is historical fiction a form of Real Person Fiction if it features people who appear in the historical record? A panel of authors and fans discuss techniques of writing historical fiction and how writing about the dead differs from writing about the living.
Panel: Alex Dally MacFarlane, Tanya Brown, Elizabeth Bear, Aliette de Bodard, Kieron Gillen.

…will probably involve me saying “Of course. Lighten up. And write about the living too, FFS. Just know why you’re fucking doing it. Same as all art ever, etc.”

Anyway! I’ll be having a nice lie down until it’s time for…

Cara’s Fireside
Time: 8:30-9:45
Once again, we’ll be rounding out the convention in front of Cara’s fireplace for a relaxed evening chat about life, video games, and whatever catches her and her guest’s interest.
Cara Ellison, Kieron Gillen

No idea what we’re going to be talking about, but Cara and I basically are very mean to each other professionally, so it should be a giggle.

And then I’ll be sleeping and never doing this ever again.

Calgary Expo: 24th-27th (I.e. This weekend)

I’ll be there.

Obviously short notice, but really looking forward to seeing anyone who’s there. I haven’t actually done a Canadian con before, so this is doubly exciting. I’ll primarily be at the Avatar booth, so do come by and say hello and/or buy fine comic product. If I’m not there, I’m sure there will be details of where I am about.

More details of the con here.

Yes, Karen Gillan’s going, so there’s the potential for one of us killing the other one and CLAIMING THE NAME ONCE AND FOR ALL.

London Super Comic Con

London Super Comic Con is this weekend. I’m there, at the Avatar booth, basically the whole time. Come and say “Hi” if you’re about. You can say more than “Hi” if you like. It’s just a traditional opening. We can wing it from there

Details here.

Edinburgh, Tonight: Jamie, Me.

I believe a few tickets are still available if anyone is in the neighborhood and want to see our twitter routine of insulting one another live.
