X360zine/Gears of War review

X360zine issue 1

An intersting one this. Gamerzines are a company who are doing online pdf magazines, made to print quality and then downloadable. They’re working on a PC Games one, but I’ve done their lead review for their XBox Gears of War review.

The format will surprise you. Initially upon looking at it you think it’s just a games magazine in PDF form, but they’re using a load of interactive and embedded elements. For example, splashes of video in the actual adverts and pop-up annotations for the box outs and so on.

Go download. Tell me what you make of it.

ooooh … a hat, a brooch … a pterodactyl…

You have a 360 now?

Did you ever play kill.switch? Gears reminds me a lot of that.

Tom: Yeah, I was going to namecheck kill.switch (And Rogue Trooper, for that matter), but ran out of space.

Not played Rogue Trooper. I guess I now must.

Yeah, Rogue Trooper’s honestly a fun little game. I liked it a lot.

YOU HAVE A 360 NOW??!!!!!!!6

That is quite pretty. It’s the first proper 360 magazine I’ve read as well, they do seem to be living up to the XBox credo of “no new types of games”. I’ve been wondering for years, where does that _come_ from?

(I know that’s not the most insightful or new comment, but I’ve never seen anywhere where it’s laid down “Here’s why you won’t see an Xbox Katamari”

First Impressions: Preview on OSX makes a complete mess of it. I’ll have to find another PDF reader.

This is going to come across as totally biased - but it’s not a Disposable Media is it? Yeah, I’m the Editor, yeah, I would say that but…

…I do actually think that. DM looks neater and simpler. With unlimited pages stuff could (and should) really have been spread out more. DM is not quite so consistent, but considering that it has managed to make £2.12 in donations since it’s inception and this (presumably) is making at least a few hundred profit an issue at the very least, you’ve got to wonder what things would be like with roles reversed.

As for “made to print quality” - most of the images look dire at full screen on my twenty inch monitor. They’d be horrific printed.

The (tiny amount) of content isn’t bad but it wouldn’t have been difficult to be just a little more interesting.

Nice review though, looking forward to the game.
